Thermographic measurements enable cost-efficient refurbishment of traction motors that were previously considered irreparable. This method not only helps conserve resources but also improves sustainability in urban public transport.
Measurements with a thermal imaging camera enable the rebuilding of traction motors
For years, the failed traction motors from the manufacturer Ansaldo-Breda lay as scrap in the warehouse of the operator of a Northern European city's metro system. However, induction measurements recorded with a thermal imaging camera led to the conclusion that the motors could be restored. On the one hand, reconditioning the motors without replacing the laminated core of the stator was technically feasible. Cost-effectiveness was therefore assured. And with regard to insulation values and the associated heat development, the rebuilt motors also fell within the standard tolerance ranges. Long-term operational reliability could thus be guaranteed.
Ansaldo-Breda traction motors are found in numerous metro trains from the manufacturer Ansaldo-Breda (now: Hitachi Italy) and are therefore in operation in many European metropolitan areas.
