Testing of the unit consisting of traction motor, gearbox, wedge-package coupling, and hollow shaft under load
Some of the Stadler GTW DMU multiple units are equipped with TSA traction motors (type TMF 59-33-4), Voith gearboxes, and hollow-shaft drives with wedge-package couplings. This design allows the motor and gearbox to be fully suspended from the bogie frame, which reduces running noise and vibrations at higher speeds and minimizes wear on the track and superstructure.
To test such a wheelset under load, we have set up a special test rig at our site in Krefeld. This allows the traction motor to be tested with varying power while simultaneously simulating a variable load on the wheelset.
The aim of the test was to analyse heat development in the bearings and gearbox, as well as any occurring creep currents.

Testing traction motors and gearboxes under realistic conditions can provide important insights for continued trouble-free operation in cases of recurring unexplained damage patterns, for example on bearings or the control system.
